ARC Review: He’s Come Undone

Hello hello, and happy belated release day to He’s Come Undone, a romance anthology featuring starchy heroes! This incredible collection of novellas by Emma Barry, Olivia Dade, Adriana Herrera, Ruby Lang, and Cat Sebastian dropped on Tuesday, May 12, and I was fortunate enough to receive an e-ARC from the authors. I also participated in the bookstagram tour (check my picture below!). You can pick up an e-copy here on Amazon.

Each story features a straight laced hero being slowly unwound, and the table of contents is as follows:

  • Appassionata – Emma Barry
  • Unraveled – Olivia Dade
  • Caught Looking – Adriana Herrera
  • Yes, And… – Ruby Lang
  • Tommy Cabot Was Here – Cat Sebastian

Appassionata features piano technician Brennan, who is working with diva pianist Kristy Kwong, a face from his past, as she struggles to rediscover her lost passion for music and save her career whilst battling intense stage fright. Brennan is the calm, collected, and quietly caring types who is quickly unraveled by Kristy, who’s his polar opposite in almost everything.

In Unraveled, we have meticulous and straight-laced math teacher Simon, who is paired to mentor the new art teacher Poppy, who is organized chaos embodied. Oh, she also makes murder dioramas in her free time. Simon is assigned to observe her classes, and with each day, finds himself inexplicably drawn to her. Poppy was perhaps my favorite character of the entire book, and both her and Simon were interesting, multi-faceted, and well-rounded. I loved the contrast between Poppy’s messy classroom and the care she took in her dioramas, and how Simon found himself drawn in to solving the mystery of the miniature murder.

Caught Looking is the childhood friends to lovers story (pining!! Horny pining!! So much pining!!!!), which features best friends Yariel and Hatuey. After a drunken and intense hook up, Yariel quickly calls things off, despite having held deep feelings for Hatuey for years, because no matter what, he won’t ruin their friendship. Good thing Hatuey won’t back off easily. I basically yelled the whole time I was reading this story. It was great.

Yes, And… Rheumatologist Darren Zhang with borderline high blood pressure tries to attend a meditation class and ends up accidentally attending an improv class lead by Joan Lacy. In very relatable fashion, he’s too anxious and too polite to leave the class, so he stays until the end (oh my god, please protect him). It starts with dinner and goes from there. Darren is sweet and understanding, helping Joan through her anxieties as she cares for her elderly mother.

Tommy Cabot Was Here – ANOTHER friends to lovers story? I have truly been blessed. Everett Sloane and Tommy Cabot used to have a thing, you know, a thing, back in their school days. Rather than confronting his feelings about Tommy, Everett joined the army, then left the country for 15 years. However, when he returns to his alma mater to teach, who does he bump into but Tommy and his young son. I’m a huge fan of Sebastian’s writing, and this novella has become a new favorite of mine. It was achingly sweet and absolutely perfect.

4.5/5⭐ to He’s Come Undone

Enjoyment: 4.5/5
Execution: 4.5/5

Overall, a light-hearted, romantic, and sexy anthology filled with interesting characters and great writing by some amazing authors. I definitely recommend this to all romance fans! The short length of the novellas was perfect for me during my reading slump, and I really enjoyed the read. Thanks for having me along!

As always, feel free to reach out to me on social media (Twitter, Instagram, Goodreads)!

With love, Pei
